Pinewood Derby

Our pinewood derby took place on March 11th, 2011

Here is Soren with his car, the Ipod Racer.  It can even play music.

Soren designed this car himself, about 2 months before the event, and then proceeded to bug James every day to help him build it.  I admired his organizational planning and persistence.

Here is J.B. with his car, the Feathered Champion (it's a penguin).

J.B. completely designed and cut and built his car without any help from James.  The only downside to this is that the scout leader who helped him cut his car into this shape forgot to leave the wheel wells intact.  As a result, there was nowhere to attach the wheels.  Not only that, but now the wheels were too narrow to fit on the track and roll down.  This poor car was duct taped together, entirely, including the wheels.  After every race it had to be completely duct-taped again.
During one memorable run, the car lost all of its wheels and just plopped down mid-way on the track.  The rest of the wheels kept rolling to the finish line.  I think 1 wheel came in 2nd place.  The cubs were hysterical with laughter.  They thought it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen.  J.B. was good about it. He came in last out of his group of 10.

These are some phenomenal cakes that were made by Mischell Shapiro.  She did a cake representing the block of wood and wheels and stickers and nails that the boys are given as the original kit, and then a 2nd cake showing a finished racecar.

J.B.'s car in the line-up.

Discovered my twin, separated at birth.  Since we both had red curly hair and the same color of shirt on, people kept confusing us for the other when they saw our backs.  This is Julie Berry, my friend from Weston I.

Soren took 3rd place out of 9 boys his age.  Good job Soren.   He won a trophy created by a soda bottle with a hotwheels car hot glued to the top.  Very cute!
Bad mom admission:  We secretly hope that our kids will never qualify to go on to Districts. We'd prefer that the Pinewood derby last one night.  That's enough for us.
